Origin/Causes
More than 31.5 % of Bangladeshi citizens live under the poverty line. As a result, many citizens are struggling to provide for and support their families. To subsidize, many take jobs in textile industries because they pay more reasonably than the majority of other jobs. There are over 500 garment factories in Bangladesh that employ approximately 4 million workers. Contrary to popular belief, over 90% of factory workers in Bangladesh are women. All of the people working inside these factories are doing so to maintain their bills. As of now, Bangladesh has the world's lowest minimum wage, implying many citizens resorted to working in these poorly maintained factories. Bangladesh has become the second-largest exporter of apparel in the world, only preceded by China.
The primary reason many of these workers partake in the textile business is because of the money. The average worker earns 2 dollars a day. Although that may seen extremely low, it is a relatively high number for the citizens of Bangladesh. In addition, the work is stable since foreign companies are relying on the factories to produce their goods. As a result, many who are working in the city wire money to their families back home in rural areas. Through this, workers are able to keep their families secure.
